Entry 1
Here are some of the starting day pictures. The dash will have a new Kenwood head unit installed. The kick panels will be rebuilt for Boston Pro60SE speakers, and the table of product shows everything going into this build.
Entry 2
Panels have been removed and the trunk is getting a layer of Hushmat over the large areas of sheet metal. The back seat was removed to run wiring from the front of the car into the trunk. We removed the kick panels to start prepairing the speaker mounts.
Entry 3
The subwoofer enclosures are being built. We are using two JL Audio 12W3V3-4 subwoofers. Between the subwoofer enclosures is the amp rack designed to mount two JL Audio amplifiers, the XD600/1 and XD400/4. The enclosure is being covered in vinyl to match the car's interior color scheme.
Entry 4
We removed the trunk lid to build a fiberglass mould that could be covered with carpet and make for a nice finishing touch in the trunk opening. The lid was first covered in hushmat, then taped over. A layer of aluminum foil covered the tape for easier removal of the fiberglass. We applied wax on the foil so that the dried fiberglass could be lifted off with ease.
Once the fiberglass mould was removed, it needed to be shaved down to the correct shape. After this, we wrapped it with the carped and mounted it to the trunk lid.
Entry 5
First we used hushmat to deaden the metal panels around the speakers in the kick panel area. Then we used a test speaker pod to measure for the best midrange and tweeter placement. This allows us to find what position to mount the speakers in to create the best image and stage in the car.
Once the locations were decided upon, we used ABS plastic to mount the midrange in place. The tweeters were located in the kick panels as well.
Entry 6
We took the factory kick panel and used it as form and then made a frame with ABS plastic for the grille. Once the frame was made, we moulded that into the factory kick panel and then test fitted everything. Making sure it would fit, we covered the panel in vinyl to match the car's interior and used a tan grille cloth to cover the speakers. There is a slightly different angle on each side of the car, making room for the individually aimed speakers.
Entry 7
The trunk was trimmed out with panels to make a clean, finished look. The Impala logo was embossed into each side of the trunk. The subwoofer grille was encorporated into a large Chevy bowtie and set off with a deep red speaker grill cloth.
Entry 8
The trunk was completed and the finishing touches were added. The subwoofer enclosure with amplifier rack was mounted in the back of the trunk. Panels were built to hide all wiring and hardware for a clean look. Two Impala logos were embossed into each side fo the trunk and a large red bowtie was created as the subwoofer speaker grille.
